Product Manager* Mainframe Modernization

Software AG customers, large enterprises, and government organizations worldwide have developed business-critical enterprise applications based on IBM z/OS COBOL. A key objective is to modernize these systems for future readiness and cost-effective operation.

Software AG plans to launch a new product to modernize COBOL z/OS applications using Java technologies on z/OS.

We are seeking an experienced Product Manager* COBOL Mainframe Modernization to drive product strategy and market adoption.

This role requires high technical credibility, a customer-centric mindset, and thought leadership.

Essential Functions

• Support global customers in IBM z/OS COBOL optimization and modernization projects leveraging Java technologies across various stakeholders (presales, professional services, partners).
• Assist customers with Proof of Concepts (PoC) to demonstrate product capabilities and value.
• Understand complex customer issues and recommend technical solutions.
• Gather, review, and prioritize customer requirements into feature backlogs.
• Enhance demo environments to showcase product features.
• Create content and increase market awareness via webinars, events, social media, blogs, and user groups, collaborating closely with product marketing. Establish thought leadership in the IBM Z community.
• Enable internal teams such as presales, professional services, and support.
• Work collaboratively within a cross-functional, international team to shape product strategy and roadmap.
• Monitor mainframe modernization market trends and competitive landscape.

Qualifications

• Bachelor\’s degree in computer science, IT, or a related field; advanced degrees or certifications (e.g., IBM, Interskill) are a plus.
• Extensive experience in architecting, developing, and modernizing large-scale COBOL z/OS applications.
• Proven expertise with mainframe databases (Db2, VSAM, IMS, Adabas), transaction monitors (CICS), batch processing (JCL, job scheduling, Sort), development tools (e.g., ISPF, IBM Developer for z/OS), COBOL debugging, and source management on z/OS.
• Experience with z/OS middleware (MQ, CTG, z/OS Connect) and IMS is advantageous.
• Several years of developing full-stack Java enterprise applications on IBM z/OS, focusing on databases, performance, automation, and troubleshooting.
• Understanding of IBM mainframe software billing/licensing models.
• Ability to thrive in an agile environment.
• Excellent communication skills in English, capable of explaining technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
• Customer-focused, collaborative, and problem-solving mindset.
• Self-motivated with a proactive attitude and the ability to mentor stakeholders.
• Willingness to travel internationally up to 20% as needed.
