Job Description:
Introduction
Are you an enthusiastic engineer interested in magnets and particle accelerators? The most advanced electromagnets in the world are fundamental components at the core of all CERN accelerators, including the Future Circular Collider. Come and join a great team pushing the limits of this technology, working on this ambitious machine. Take part!
In the Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostats (MSC) group within CERN’s Technology Department (TE), we design, build, and support the operation of all beam line magnets in the CERN accelerator complex, both normal and superconducting. Our Magnetic Measurement and Modelling Section (MMM) leads the way in developing and implementing cutting-edge instrumentation. We create innovative solutions for magnetic measurements, and material characterization. Our work also includes computational solutions to tackle challenges in electromagnetism as well as magnetic field shielding and safety aspects.
Be part of a diverse, innovative team ensuring the reliable operation of the magnets of the CERN accelerator complex and contributing to the upgrades that will make tomorrow’s machines a reality. Join us and make an impact on the future of particle physics!
Functions
As a Magnet Test and Measurement Engineer you will:
- Develop, test and qualify the instrumentation (hardware and software components) and calibration procedures aimed at the dynamic characterization and control of magnets for the Future Circular Collider;
- Define testing strategies for the Future Circular Collider magnets, tailored to the scale of the project, and model driven experiments to meet beam optics requirements and operational efficiency targets;
- Organise and carry out data acquisition and reduction campaigns on relevant magnets, as support to the development of instrumentation to apply the lessons learned to the Future Circular Collider.
Qualifications
Master’s degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electronics, electrical engineering or a related field.
Experience:
We are looking for a Magnet Test and Measurement Engineer with a demonstrated aptitude for working in a large and diverse multidisciplinary team, in possession of:
- Proven experience in the development, testing and application of digital electronic data acquisition systems and related firmware/software components;
- Experience in the measurement and dynamic characterization of magnets and magnetic materials, using a wide range of methods and techniques.
Experience in any of the following areas would be an asset:
- Operation of particle accelerators; computational methods and tools for electromagnetism; embedded, real-time and distributed systems.
Technical competencies:
- Measurement and analysis of magnets;
- Knowledge of programming techniques and languages: (VHDL, C++, Python);
- Analysis and measurement of dynamic effects in electromagnetic equipment;
- Knowledge and application of computational methods and tools in electromagnetism.
Behavioural competencies:
- Working in Teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships;
- Achieving Results: delivering prompt and efficient service taking into account customer needs;
- Demonstrating Accountability: working conscientiously and reliably; delivering on promises;
- Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements;
