Research Internship: Short-Term Wind Power Forecasting

At Trasteel, you will help build the forecasting layer behind our intraday and day-ahead power trading. Your focus will be forecasting wind generation over the next 0–48 hours, with opportunities to extend the framework to solar generation in the future.

You will turn weather forecasts and live generation data into actionable trading signals, working directly with the traders who use them.

As part of a small team, your models will be tested quickly, and their impact on trading performance will be directly visible.

Responsibilities:

• Develop and backtest wind-power forecasts for 0–48 hours, with particular focus on the first 24 hours.
• Combine existing weather forecasts from providers such as DMI, DWD, and ECMWF with recent generation data.
• Improve weather-to-power conversion, provider blending, and forecast-bias correction.
• Work with traders to translate forecast revisions into trading signals.

Requirements:

• Currently pursuing or recently completed a Master’s or PhD in wind energy, meteorology, atmospheric science, data science, applied mathematics, or a related field.
• Strong Python, time-series, and machine-learning skills.
• Understanding of wind-power generation and turbine power curves.
• Experience with GRIB/NetCDF, gridded NWP data, or probabilistic forecasting is a plus.
• Able to conduct independent, well-documented research.
