TSL is an equal opportunity employer and we are especially proud that our dynamic, international team is made up of colleagues representing 57 nationalities across the world. We want big-picture thinkers who aren't afraid to roll up their sleeves, refusing to settle for 'good enough' and pushing for great each time. We are firm believers that to build quality, you must invest in quality. We will continue to invest in our biggest asset: our amazing team.

About the BuildForward

BuildForward (Learn. Grow. Lead.) is TSL's international early careers development programme. Graduates join TSL in full-time roles and combine structured development, mentoring, practical responsibility and exposure to experienced teams. The first 12 months form the Foundation Year, but our ambition is longer term, to develop talented graduates into future specialists, managers and leaders across TSL.

About the Role

We are looking for an ambitious ESG & Sustainability Graduate to join our Sustainability team in Germany. This is an opportunity to begin your career at the point where sustainability strategy meets real construction delivery. You will work in a matrix environment with Sustainability colleagues and teams across live projects and corporate functions. Your exposure will include environmental management, carbon and emissions, sustainability data and reporting, responsible procurement and supply chains, social value, project sustainability, certification and accreditation, policy and governance, and continuous improvement. This is not a programme where you will spend 12 months observing. You will begin with structured learning and shadowing, then progressively contribute, own defined tasks and ultimately lead selected meetings or deliverables as your capability grows.

What You Will Do

  • Support the Sustainability team with day-to-day ESG and sustainability activities across projects and corporate functions.
  • Collect, organise, quality-check and analyse sustainability data, evidence and performance information.
  • Support internal and external ESG reporting, including gap analysis, evidence gathering and preparation of reporting inputs.
  • Assist project teams with environmental and sustainability documentation, trackers, action plans and compliance evidence.
  • Support sustainability certification and accreditation activities such as BREEAM, LEED or equivalent schemes where applicable.
  • Participate in project/site sustainability inspections and support the close-out of findings and actions.
  • Engage with project teams, suppliers and subcontractors to communicate sustainability requirements and gather required information.
  • Support the development and implementation of environmental management processes and relevant elements of the Environmental Management System.
  • Research emerging ESG legislation, client requirements, market trends and industry best practice and translate findings into practical summaries.
  • Support carbon, emissions, waste, circular economy, social value, responsible sourcing or other thematic workstreams according to business priorities.
  • Prepare presentations, dashboards, reports, meeting materials and clear written communications for varied audiences.
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings and progressively take ownership of defined actions and deliverables.
  • Complete a defined ESG improvement or business-value project during the Foundation Year and present recommendations to relevant stakeholders.

The 12-Month Development Journey

  • Months 0-3 | Foundations, administration & shadowing | Understand TSL, ESG priorities, systems, project context and core reporting; contribute reliably to data, evidence, research and coordination.
  • Months 3-6 | Thematic development & implementation | Develop deeper capability in one or two ESG themes and begin producing defined outputs for projects or corporate workstreams.
  • Months 6-9 | Independent delivery | Own selected recurring tasks and deliverables using a Task-Action-Goal framework; work with decreasing supervision and engage directly with stakeholders.
  • Months 9-12 | Ownership, leadership & readiness | Lead a defined meeting, workstream or deliverable; present recommendations; demonstrate readiness for the next-stage ESG/Sustainability role.

What You Will Learn

  • How ESG and sustainability strategy is translated into measurable action across a construction business.
  • Environmental management in a live project environment, including inspections, controls, documentation and improvement actions.
  • ESG data management, performance metrics, evidence quality, analysis and reporting.
  • Carbon and emissions concepts, resource efficiency, waste and circular-economy principles.
  • Sustainable procurement, supplier engagement and responsible supply-chain expectations.
  • Social value and the wider social dimension of ESG, including stakeholder and community considerations.
  • Sustainability certifications and building-rating schemes, including BREEAM, LEED or equivalent where relevant.
  • ESG governance, policies, management systems, audit readiness and regulatory/client requirements.
  • Professional communication, report writing, presentation, stakeholder management and influencing.
  • How Sustainability interacts with Project Delivery, EHS, Procurement, Commercial, HR/People, Compliance, Finance/Data and clients.

What We Are Looking For

We are interested in potential as much as prior experience. You do not need to arrive as an ESG expert; you do need to be curious, motivated, analytical and genuinely interested in building a long-term career in sustainability.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Sustainability, Business Administration or another relevant discipline.
  • Recent graduate, complete fresher, relevant part-time/internship experience or typically less than one year of professional experience.
  • Strong and genuine interest in ESG, sustainability and the built environment.
  • Ability to work with data accurately and confidently; strong Microsoft Excel skills are advantageous.
  • Competence with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint and willingness to learn sustainability assessment/reporting tools.
  • Clear written and verbal communication and the confidence to work with different stakeholders.
  • Analytical thinking, attention to detail, curiosity and a practical problem-solving mindset.
  • Initiative, accountability and willingness to take ownership as competence develops.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in an international, matrix and project-driven environment.
  • Professional working proficiency in English; German and additional European languages are advantageous

.

What Will Make You Successful

  • You ask thoughtful questions and actively seek to understand why, not only what.
  • You are comfortable moving between detailed data and the bigger sustainability picture.
  • You turn learning into action and can be trusted to follow through on commitments.
  • You communicate clearly, respectfully and professionally with technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • You respond positively to feedback and show visible development over time.
  • You are willing to spend time with live project teams and understand sustainability in practice.
  • You care about measurable impact rather than sustainability as a purely theoretical subject.
  • You want to build a long-term career and progressively take on greater responsibility.

What We Offer

  • A full-time 12-month BuildForward Foundation Year role, with the possibility of progression or extension subject to performance, business requirements and available opportunities.
  • Structured development under the guidance of TSL's Sustainability team.
  • A dedicated Line Manager and access to experienced ESG and sustainability professionals.
  • Cross-functional exposure to live construction projects and corporate teams.
  • A Personal Development Plan (PDP) with regular feedback and capability reviews.
  • Practical responsibility from the beginning, increasing as your competence grows.
  • BuildForward networking, learning and graduate-community opportunities.
  • Exposure to an international construction and engineering business and a potential long-term career pathway within ESG & Sustainability.

Career Direction

The Foundation Year is designed to create a strong platform for progression towards roles such as ESG/Sustainability Coordinator or Junior Sustainability Advisor, followed over time by Sustainability/ESG Advisor, Sustainability Manager or Specialist, Senior Sustainability/ESG Manager and future regional or Group sustainability leadership opportunities. Progression depends on performance, competence, business needs and available opportunities.

Health, Safety and Wellbeing

At TSL, safety is everyone's responsibility. All employees are expected to actively contribute to maintaining a safe and healthy working environment by complying with company policies, project safety requirements, and applicable legislation. Employees are encouraged to promote a positive safety culture, identify potential risks, and support continuous improvement initiatives that protect the wellbeing of colleagues, partners, and project stakeholders.
