Your responsibility
The Intelligent Networks and Management of Distributed Systems Research Group (INET) is looking to hire a senior research assistant to work on future communication networks and future applications offered through these networks. The INET research group investigates networked systems that are self-* (i.e., self-optimizing, self-repairing, self-configuring). We are particularly interested in automated and data-driven approaches to design, optimize, and verify networked and distributed systems.
Traditionally and still today, networks are operated in a rather static and conservative manner. However, it is known that in principle, a more dynamic network operation can greatly improve the efficiency of networks: empirical studies show that communication traffic and resource popularity feature much structure, i.e., are bursty and skewed. More dynamic network operations are also useful to support adaptive policy changes, service relocations, or emerging “self-driving networks". This project is motivated by the desire to leverage the benefits of more flexible network operations for the specific application case of machine learning networks.
Main responsibilities:
- Lay the theoretical and algorithmic foundations of more adaptive machine learning networks.
- Investigate the limitations of fault-tolerant decentralized machine learning algorithms.
- Devise exact and approximate algorithms for federated learning and prove their correctness analytically.
- Fundraising of third-party funds as well as direction, organization and conducting research of the research projects.
- Communication with research partners in the research projects. Writing intermediate and final research reports. Communication of the research results to funding organizations and to industrial partners.
- Teaching the courses “Algorithms for Distributed Systems” and “Algorithms for Networked Systems” offered by the INET group. Conception of new courses considering new developments in computer science and in regard to the module catalogue of Faculty IV.
- Supervising master and bachelor theses. Supervising of PhD students of the INET research group.
- Organization of teaching of the research group.
- Dissemination of research results: describe the results in scientific publications and posters; presentation of research results at international conferences and workshops and/or presentation to industry partners.
- Organization of international scientific symposia and workshops.
