Faculty of Life Sciences / Department Microorganisms
W2 Professorship for Evolution and Systematics of Microorganisms
We offer a joint appointment of the Technical University of Braunschweig (W"6 level) and the Leibniz Institute DSMZ‑German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures GmbH in the function of Head of the Department Microorganisms . The appointment is for the earliest possible date.
The department is located at the Leibniz Institute DSMZ on the Science Campus Braunschweig‑Süd. DSMZ is one of the world’s largest bioresource centres and a research infrastructure of the Leibniz Association. Its mission encompasses the provision, research, and utilization of microorganisms, cell cultures and other biological resources.
Your responsibilities
The professorship is intended to strengthen the research focus on systematics and evolution of microorganisms and to complement the life sciences profile of the university with an evolutionary biology perspective. The successful candidate will expand the existing focus areas of systems biology, biotechnology, biochemistry and neurobiology and contribute to the expansion of systems biology in collaboration with partner institutions (TU Braunschweig, Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research). The research should focus on the systematics and evolution of microorganisms, including the integration of big‑data methods, comparative genomics, modern bioinformatics and artificial intelligence into phylogenetic analysis and classification of microbial taxa. In particular, microbiome research is to be strengthened, new application fields opened, and difficult‑to‑cultivate microorganisms made systematically accessible. Proven experience in isolation and cultivation of novel microorganisms is desirable. The successful candidate is expected to establish internationally competitive, third‑party funded research projects and to contribute to the development of structures at the DSMZ and the TU Braunschweig.
The candidate will also take responsibility for service areas encompassing research, teaching, studies, transfer, governance and administration, with particular emphasis on digitalisation, internationalisation, equality and diversity, and knowledge exchange.
Our expectations
International experience in teaching and research, a very good command of the English language and the ability and willingness to teach in English are expected.
Individual career decisions and career breaks due to parental or family‑care leave affecting research output will be taken into account.
