Senior Civil Engineer - HVDC Converter Stations & Cable Infrastructure

Turner Lovell is recruiting a Senior Civil Engineer for our client, major European utility group. Across their subsidiaries in Europe, they build to maintain offshore and onshore grids whilst providing engineering advisory to the Middle East, US and Asian electricity grid networks.
We are looking for a Senior Civil Engineer with extensive civil design experience to oversee design development and set technical specifications for HVDC converter stations and associated onshore cable infrastructure. You will help shape projects from early development, working on converter station civil packages typically valued at €50-100m and onshore cable routes of approximately 50-120km. The ideal candidate will have experience delivering design scopes in developed markets such as Europe. Experience in the UK or Germany would be desirable.
This is an opportunity to influence major grid projects at an early stage, from site and route selection through to the specifications that guide construction. Travel will be on an ad hoc basis, with some busier periods for design workshops and specification development.
The role:
- Develop and review civil designs, specifications and technical scopes for converter stations and cable infrastructure.
- Assess site and route feasibility, considering ground conditions, access, trenching and crossings.
- Ensure designs are practical to construct, cost-effective and clearly specified.
- Coordinate design interfaces between civil contractors, converter manufacturers, cable suppliers and project teams.
- Prepare technical requirements and support tender evaluations alongside the relevant package managers.
We are looking for:
- A civil engineering qualification and a strong track record in infrastructure design.
- Relevant experience on cable, pipeline or other major onshore linear infrastructure projects.
- The ability to set specifications, review designs and challenge technical proposals.
- Experience gained with a contractor, engineering consultancy, developer or asset owner. Contractor design and construction experience is particularly valuable.
- Clear communication in English and confidence working with international engineering teams.
Previous HVDC experience is welcome but not essential. For the converter station buildings, experience designing large-span industrial buildings or comparable facilities is relevant. HDD and cable landfall experience would be an advantage.
