Position description

The Division of Biomedical Sciences within the School of Medicine (SOM) at the University of California Riverside is seeking to hire 2 new faculty members at the rank of Associate or Full Professor of Teaching (analogous to tenure). We are seeking accomplished scholars with demonstrated excellence in teaching and teaching pedagogy in biomedical sciences, human physiology and human disease relevant to curriculum in SOM’s pre-clerkship medical curriculum and the Division of Biomedical Sciences master’s degree and post-baccalaureate program.

This Academic Senate position offers excellent opportunities for collaborative research in biomedical research and education within SOM and the Division. A successful candidate must demonstrate experience with curriculum development, innovation in teaching, medical education research and educational grant writing is highly desirable. Preference will be given to candidates with research experience in biomedical sciences, human physiology or human disease. The successful candidates will have a primary appointment in the Division of Biomedical Sciences (biomed.ucr.edu).

The University of California, Riverside is situated in an historic citrus growing area surrounded by mountain ranges. Riverside is about an hour away from ski slopes, surfing, or hiking in mountain or desert environments, and housing in the area is very affordable. The campus is also located in a prime position to take advantage of the other universities, research institutes, and biotech industries present in Southern California. The School of Medicine at UCR is the sixth University of California Medical School and serves the rapidly growing and dynamic Inland Southern California region by training a much-needed physician workforce and catalyzing innovations in research, education, and health care delivery that will improve the health of medically underserved populations. Laboratory and office space will be in the Gold-LEED School of Medicine research building. Areas of research within the Division include addiction, cancer biology, drug discovery,
endocrinology, GI physiology & disorders, pulmonology, integrative immunology, host-pathogen interactions, neurodegeneration, neurodevelopmental disorders and RNA biology. School of Medicine has 7 research centers: BREATHE, Center for Cannabinoid Research, Center for Glial-Neuronal Interactions, Center for Healthy Communities, Center for Health Disparities Research, Center for Molecular and Translational Medicine and Center for RNA Biology & Medicine. The Division of Biomedical Sciences sponsors an innovative Ph.D. program that integrates the core medical curriculum with biomedical graduate training and research, as well as a vibrant master’s degree and post-baccalaureate program.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D., M.D., Pharm D., or equivalent degree and qualify for professor of teaching at the University of California. The appropriate rank at Associate or Full Professor of Teaching level will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. After appointment, advancement through the faculty ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input. Rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the medical curriculum and actively participate in
the Biomedical Sciences graduate program. Joint appointments in SOM Division of Clinical Sciences are available for candidates with active clinical practices.

The posted UC salary scales (https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/compensation/index.html) set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5 for the salary range. The Base Salary range for this position is $123,100 – $262,200. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan (https://somacademicaffairs.ucr.edu/sites/g/files/rcwecm2346/files/2021-02/2021-02-11HSCP%20Plan.pdf), which provides eligibility for additional compensation.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Ph.D., M.D., Pharm D., or equivalent degree and qualify for a tenure-track or tenured faculty appointment at the University of California with a record of ongoing external research funding.

Candidates seeking joint clinical appointments must possess an M.D., or equivalent degree and be eligible to practice in the State of California. These candidates must be board certified or board eligible.

Preferred qualifications

Preference will be given to those individuals examining molecular mechanisms of disease who are committed to a collaborative approach to research, and who are experts in their specific disease model.

For clinical researchers, candidates who have completed a clinical fellowship in their respective specialties are preferred.
