The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Climate Change Division is the lead Division charged with carrying out the functions of UNEP in the field of environmental Climate Change. To fulfil its mandate, the work of the Climate Change Division focuses on: working with Members States and Partners to accelerate and support a just transition by addressing mitigation and adaptation gaps through enhancing implementation capacity, access to finance and technology, and building resilience.
This position is located in the Climate Change Division, Geneva duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Head of UN-REDD Programme, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
Responsibilities:
- Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of UN-REDD Programme safeguards and multiple benefits activities:
- Monitor and analyze the development and implementation of safeguards and multiple benefits activities.
- Review relevant documents and reports.
- Identify problems and issues to be addressed and propose corrective actions.
- Liaise with relevant parties and track follow-up actions.
- Providing guidance to external consultants, government officials, and other parties.
- Drafting mission summaries.
- Drafting background papers, analyses, and sections of reports and studies.
- Providing inputs to publications.
- Reviewing and analyzing existing safeguards-relevant policies, laws, and regulations.
- Informing in-country approaches to fulfilling safeguards requirements under the UNFCCC and for results-based payments.
- Proposing agenda topics.
- Identifying participants.
- Preparing documents and presentations.
- Conducting training, workshops, and seminars.
- Delivering presentations on REDD+ safeguards and multiple benefits topics/activities.
- UN-REDD Programme preparation and submissions.
- Progress reports and financial statements.
- Related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.).
- Graphs, charts, tables, and reports using data visualization methods.
- Enabling data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation, and reporting.
Requirements:
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration, or related area is required. Experience with Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation plus (REDD+) is desirable. Experience with safeguards and multiple benefits, together with that of the UN system and/or other similar international organization is desirable. A minimum of two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, knowledge of Spanish is desirable. Knowledge of any other language is desirable.
Education:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in natural resources management, rural development, environmental/social sciences, environmental law, or in a related area is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science programs is desirable.
