GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for cutting‑edge science. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), one of the world’s largest research projects, is built in international cooperation.
The Materials Research Department is seeking a highly qualified Postdoctoral Researcher with a background in materials science, chemistry, physics, or related fields. The research will be conducted within the DINERWA project in cooperation with several German and European partners. The position focuses on the synthesis of advanced alloys by electrodeposition and the investigation of their radiation hardness in the context of fusion research.

Your profile:
- An above‑average university degree and a Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field
- Strong research background in electrodeposition
- Excellent knowledge of advanced alloys and their characterization
- Experience with ion irradiation experiments and materials under extreme conditions is of advantage
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills in an international research environment
- Strong command of English, both spoken and written
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to the team
Knowledge in some of the following areas is desirable:
- Finite element simulations (e.g., ANSYS or COMSOL)
- Basic programming skills in python or C++
- Design and synthesis of bulk and nanostructured samples of advanced alloys with controlled geometry, composition, and crystallinity using electrochemical deposition
- Characterization of samples (geometry, composition, and crystallinity) using a broad range of analytical methods
- Investigation of radiation‑hardness–related material’s properties
- Publication and presentation of obtained scientific results in international journals and conferences
- Co‑supervision of students.
Employment conditions:
The position full‑time (100%) is limited to 24 months.
Salary according to the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund), effective at GSI.
