We are looking for a PhD student to join our Signal Theory and Statistical Learning group at TU Darmstadt, Germany.

The position is in the mathematical foundations of deep learning, with a focus on probability theory and random matrix theory. The successful candidate will become part of the Emmy Noether project "RMT4DL: Random Matrix Theory for Deep Learning," which aims to develop new theoretical approaches for understanding stability, generalization, and feature learning in large-scale neural networks.

We are looking for highly motivated PhD candidates with a strong interest in the mathematical foundations of deep learning and the ambition to pursue challenging research questions in this area. Successful candidates should have the following background and qualifications:

  • Excellent university degree (Master's or equivalent) in mathematics, computer science, or a closely related field.
  • Strong mathematical background, particularly in areas such as machine learning theory, probability theory, optimization, and linear algebra. Experience with random matrix theory is a plus.
  • Programming experience in Python. Familiarity with deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch or JAX) is a plus.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Strong analytical skills and enthusiasm for independent research.
