Overview
In this role you will develop evidence-based guidelines applying green chemistry across the EV life-cycle. You will work with UNEP’s Chemicals and Health Branch to translate science into policy-ready practices, supporting LMICs and global stakeholders. You will map material flows, assess risks, and compile best practices to promote safer, more circular EV value chains. This position combines research, policy guidance, and capacity-building to help reduce environmental and health impacts in EVs.
Verantwortungsbereiche
- Conduct comprehensive literature and policy reviews on green and sustainable chemistry in the EV value chain
- Assess environmental and chemical risks across the EV life-cycle and identify hazardous substances
- Map material flows of key EV battery materials and identify intervention points
- Identify best practices, case studies, and policy needs for sustainable EV value chains
- Develop practical, evidence-based guidelines for policymakers, industry, and practitioners
- Draft and finalize the guidance document with stakeholder feedback and references
- Create training materials (PowerPoint) for policymakers in LMICs (1–2 hours)
- Integrate guidelines into the online Regulatory Toolkit for Used EVs and Battery End-of-Life, ensuring usability for LMIC policymakers
- Coordinate and report with the UNEP project team, incorporating feedback at each stage
Zentrale Anforderungen
- Advanced university degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, green chemistry, environmental science, materials science, waste management, sustainable materials, or closely related discipline
- Minimum five years of relevant professional experience in sustainable chemistry, chemicals management, environmental management, or related fields
- Experience applying green and sustainable chemistry to EV or battery value chains
- Experience with EV battery chemistries, manufacturing, and recycling technologies, and end-of-life management
- Experience using life-cycle approaches or material flow analysis to assess environmental impacts
- Knowledge of chemical risk assessment and management related to EV components and hazardous substances
- Experience advising on collection, dismantling, and recycling of EV batteries and e-waste
- Familiarity with Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm Conventions and LMIC regulatory contexts
- Experience developing technical guidance or policy recommendations for governments or international bodies
- Multicultural and international collaboration experience
