The position is based at the Department of Old Testament Studies at the University of Graz, as part of the international research project ‘(Re-)Shaping Empires in the Hasmonean Era. The Impact of Hasmonean Ideology on the Biblical Representations of the Babylonian and Persian Empires’ (FWF Grant-DOI 10.55776/PIN1285625), in cooperation with the Faculty of Theology at the University of Göttingen. The project investigates the influence of political and ideological discourses of the Hasmonean era on the biblical representations of the Babylonian and Persian empires. The focus is on literary, redaction and textual‑historical analyses of selected texts from the Hebrew Bible and the Septuagint, combined with approaches from the history of religion, social history and memory studies. The aim is to reassess the significance of the Hasmonean period for the emergence and reception of biblical literature, as well as for the formation of Jewish identity and political ideologies. Sub‑project 2, based in Graz, examines the portrayal of the Babylonian Empire and its representatives in the Books of Daniel and Judith from the perspectives outlined above. The project is being carried out in cooperation with the University of Göttingen (Prof. Dr Sarah Schulz), which hosts the complementary Sub‑Project 1: Persian Empire. Prof. Dr Benedikt Eckhardt (University of Edinburgh) is also contributing to the project as a cooperation partner. Applicants can expect an international and interdisciplinary working environment with the opportunity to play an active role in workshops, conferences and publications. At the Department of Old Testament Studies a dynamic team is working on the scholarly interpretation of the Old Testament, adopting a historical‑critical, interdisciplinary, transfer‑oriented and practice‑oriented approach. We undertake research projects ranging from historical‑critical studies of the Pentateuch and migration ethics in the Old Testament, through Old Testament leadership studies and anthropology, to Palestinian archaeology and ancient Near Eastern iconography.
