Research Associate at the Faculty of Education, seconded to the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG

Your responsibilities

Duties primarily include research. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

Under the overall authority of the Director of UIL, the incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Executive Editor of the International Review of Education – Journal of Lifelong Learning (IRE) to support UIL in the delivery of its commitments as part of _Under Pressure: Literacy and Discrimination_, a joint project of UIL and the University of Hamburg.

The incumbent will be employed by the University of Hamburg but will be seconded to UIL for the duration of the contract.

Background

Under Pressure is a joint project involving the University of Hamburg Faculty of Education and the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), led by Professor Tanja Sturm of the University of Hamburg.

The three-year project will be supported by the Ministry of Science, Research and Equality (BWFG) within the framework of the State Research Funding Hamburg.

The aim of the project is to investigate literacy-specific discrimination and disadvantage, using data sets collected in 2023 by PIAAC, as well as qualitative surveys on discrimination and disadvantage in context of low literacy in education.

As part of the project, UIL will co-organize two international conferences with the University of Hamburg and deliver four thematic workshops. Its journal, the International Review of Education (IRE), will deliver two day-long workshops to support early-career scholars on publishing their work in peer-reviewed international education journals. IRE will also publish a special issue on ‘Literacy and discrimination in times of rising populism’, drawing on some of the research from the project.

Work assignments

• contribute to the development and publication of a special issue of the International Review of Education, including by screening new submissions for quality and suitability, making recommendations to the Executive Editor, and identifying suitable reviewers
• offer other support to IRE as directed by the Executive Editor, including screening of articles for general issues and occasional copy-editing of articles and in the preparation of events
• devise and deliver two day-long practical workshops for early-career scholars at the University of Hamburg, supporting them in developing their work for publication in international education journals, with a special focus on IRE
• support the development of an online learning module, to be hosted by UIL, based on the workshops
• liaise with the University of Hamburg in scheduling and planning the workshops
• support the delivery of four project workshops and two international conferences through the preparation of agendas, PowerPoint presentations and communication materials, including short workshop reports

The successful candidate is expected to provide assistance remotely for 19,5 hours per week and to deliver the publishing workshops in person. He or she will be given a UNESCO email address for the duration of the project.

The incumbent will submit a fortnightly progress report on his or her work assignments to the Executive Editor of IRE.

The incumbent will submit a draft programme for the two workshops by the end of 2025, including clear projected outcomes for the sessions.

Your profile

A university degree in a relevant field.

Essential skills

• at least five years’ experience in academic publishing, preferably in an editorial role
• knowledge and understanding of lifelong learning policy and scholarship from an international perspective
• understanding of the requirements of academic publishing
• exceptional communication skills
• experience of workshop delivery
• high-quality writing and editing skills
• English language skills at native-speaker level
• good standard of German
• experience of editing an academic journal
