About the Role

As Whitewater Group continues to expand internationally across multiple markets, we are seeking a Commercial Controller to support the successful financial and commercial management of our projects across a range of construction and critical infrastructure environments.

This role will be responsible for overseeing project-level commercial performance, managing budgets and monthly CVRs, monitoring costs, revenue, margins, and cashflow, and ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.

Working closely with Project Managers, Operations, Procurement, Estimating, clients, suppliers, and the wider Commercial team, the successful candidate will help protect the company’s commercial position and ensure projects are delivered in line with contractual and financial requirements.

The role will also be responsible for managing client valuations and payments, identifying and negotiating variations, supporting contract administration, and managing supplier and subcontractor commercial relationships.

The successful candidate will play an active role in identifying commercial risks, managing contractual obligations, and supporting the avoidance and resolution of disputes throughout the project lifecycle.

Your profile

  • Professional

Experience: Preferably 5–8 years of experience in a business, legal, construction, quantity surveying, or related environment.

Excellent candidates with less experience may be considered if they demonstrate strong commitment and willingness to learn.

  • Education: University degree or equivalent qualification. A degree in Quantity Surveying (QS), Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field is preferred.
  • Professional Achievement: Demonstrated track record of professional achievement, ownership, and delivering results.
  • Financial & Commercial Skills: Strong knowledge of Excel, budgeting, cash flow management, cost control, and financial analysis.
  • Contract Management: Experience or solid understanding of contract drafting, contract review, and commercial terms.
  • Procurement: Knowledge of procurement processes, supplier management, and commercial negotiations.
  • Negotiation: Strong negotiation and influencing skills, with the ability to achieve commercially sound outcomes.
  • Attention to Detail: Highly detail-oriented, organised, and able to manage multiple priorities accurately.
  • Work Ethic: Hardworking, proactive, accountable, and results-oriented.
  • Continuous Learning: Demonstrates curiosity, adaptability, and a strong commitment to continuous professional development.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with Project Managers and the Operations team to take responsibility for the commercial performance of projects, reporting to the Project Manager and Commercial Managers.
  • Act as the commercial point of contact with clients, ensuring valuations are paid on time and in full, negotiating changes and defending the company’s commercial position.

Prepare and issue contractual communications.

  • Create and adjust the project budget on a monthly basis and take responsibility for accurate monthly CVRs, cost-to-completion forecasts and variance analysis, understanding the impact on project margin.
  • Take responsibility for project-level cashflow, liaising with Procurement to ensure payment terms are aligned and that client valuations remain ahead of outgoings.
  • Manage the vesting process in a contractually compliant and fully substantiated manner, ensuring the company is paid on time for materials and equipment.

Prepare vesting reports and take photographs of equipment, travelling to factories as required.

  • Ensure supplier payments are responded to in a contractually correct manner, recorded and processed on time.

Manage subcontractor and supplier relationships, ensuring payments are made only for completed works and monitoring their impact on cashflow.

  • Take responsibility for submitting client payment claims on time, to the correct contractual standard and value, with appropriate supporting evidence.

Negotiate certification, monitor client payments, resolve payment disputes and escalate where necessary.

  • Draft contracts, subcontracts and material orders, ensuring terms are aligned with the company’s risk profile. Identify contractual risks and developappropriatemanagementplans.
  • Operate contracts in accordance with their terms and draft and issue client notices correctly.
  • Identify changes in scope, design or programme and assess their cost impact.

Work with the project team, Procurement and Estimating to calculate costs, prepare client quotations and negotiate variations.

  • Review and respond to subcontractor variation claims and document the before-and-after analysis of changes.
  • Take responsibility for recording and controlling project costs, including labour, materials, plant, subcontractors and overheads.
  • Manage project cost information, including cost, revenue and margin, and incorporate it into company financial reports.
  • Take responsibility for measuring works for procurement, valuations and change orders, checking the work of others and following good measurement practices.
  • Ensure adequate insurance levels are maintained and that the required insurance certificates are obtained from the supply chain. Reactappropriatelywhenaninsuranceclaimisrequired.
  • Execute and manage the required bonds and guarantees with clients and the supply chain.
  • Engage in dispute management and avoidance, controlling risk to the business and adhering to contractual terms.
  • Work collaboratively with the Project Manager and relevant departments, providing supervision and mentorship to more junior members of the commercial team.
