Careers: Community Coordinator, Germany

Position Overview

Widen the Circle (WtC), an NGO with offices in the USA and Germany that uses history and remembrance to heal from historic injustice and combat modern prejudice, seeks a highly organized, self-motivated, and resourceful Community Coordinator. This role is hybrid remote and is half-time; on- site work will take place occasionally in Berlin. Access to Berlin and travel within Germany will be required for meetings and events.

This role is a perfect opportunity for someone who loves to connect with people, communicate, and build community, while also managing specific projects and relationships that enhance the community experience and help increase membership. Just as important as your experience is that youâ re passionate about our mission, ultra-organized and self-directed, and eager to contribute as part of a small and committed team.

Widen the Circle works with people in Germany and the U.S. who are uncovering local history related to oppression and injustice and who are using the lessons of that history to create a more just world today. We are a Boston-based organization that powerfully catalyzes the work of others by focusing on three program areas. Widen the Circle runs the Obermayer Awards, which for two decades have honored German non-Jews who commemorate and raise awareness of local Jewish communities decimated by the Nazis and fight modern antisemitism and bigotry. The Widen the Circle Network is a platform for sharing ideas, skills, and new ways to take action for activists engaged in remembrance projects and using remembrance to fight modern prejudice in Germany. Widen the Circleâ s International Bridge-Building initiative brings American activists, educators, and leaders who are in the midst of some of the most important current issues involving remembrance and historic injustice in the United States to
Germany to meet with counterparts in our German network.

We have a small, nimble team that includes staff and contractors both in the U.S. and in Germany. We also have a broad range of partners, advisors, and volunteer experts.

Job Description

The Community Coordinator will report to the Germany Operations Manager and work closely with other senior staff. The role will be half-time, totaling 20 hours per week. During the months of May/June and December/ January, (during preparations for showpiece events) the role may be extended to 30 to 40 hours per week. The Community Coordinatorâ s core responsibility will be to act as a primary resource for Widen the Circle (WtC) across a wide range of activities in Germany including the areas of networking, events, network-related communications, and organizational support. On a regular basis, the Community Coordinator will meet with the Germany Operations Manager to allocate the Coordinatorâ s time to the highest priority activities.

In the area of networking, the Community Coordinatorâ s role will be to:

  • Enhance a robust and growing network of individuals and organizations committed to remembrance and anti-prejudice work.
  • Develop and pilot strategies aimed at extending network membership and activities to younger people.
  • Create and maintain a network advisory committee.

In the area of events, the Community Coordinatorâ s role will be to:

  • Organize and implement an annual calendar of network activities including:
  • The Summer Forum in Berlin each June, which is our main in-person network event.
  • The Winter Forum each January, which is our main online network event.
  • Our study weekend each fall, which is action-oriented and is typically in collaboration with an external partner.
  • Smaller Stammtisch (regulars tables) online once a month, some with guest speakers.

In the area of network-related communications, the Community Coordinatorâ s role will be to:

  • Communicate regularly through a quarterly email newsletter to network members, as well as event-oriented emails and updates.
  • Meet with network members, partners, potential speakers/guests and prospective participants.
  • Host and facilitate meetings and discussions, both in-person and online.

In the area of organizational support, the Community Coordinatorâ s role will be to:

  • Work with the Germany Operations Manager to support the organization in maintaining and strategic partnerships in Germany.
  • Be a resource for other programs and partners that are strategically important to WtC.
  • Assist the Germany Operations Manager in the development and implementation of a Germancultivation plan for development/fundraising.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Fluency in German and English.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of people and running virtual and in-person events.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Facility with Microsoft Office, Google Suite and/or equivalent, and adept at learning new technologies.

Traits and competencies

  • Welcoming, engaging, and able to relate to a broad range of people.
  • Self-motivated and entrepreneurial; able to see projects through to completion without hands-on supervision.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Able to work well both independently and in a team.

Bonus

  • Ability to strategically use social media and familiarity with project management tools.
  • Familiarity with Germany remembrance culture and/or anti-prejudice work.
  • Knowledge of Jewish history and modern Jewish life in Germany.
  • Experience managing community groups and/or networks.

Other Needs

  • Able to communicate during U.S. East Coast and Western Europe operating hours.
  • Must be willing to work occasionally on weekends, occasional extended periods, and to travel.

Benefits

  • Access to a large highly motivated, competent and collegial team.
  • Flexible working hours with access to central work location in Berlin, as well as opportunities for remote work.
  • Room for personal development.
  • 24 days of paid vacation (with a 4 day week).
  • Employment, remuneration and social benefits based on the collective agreement for the public service: E10.1 (TVöD – Bund).

We encourage you to apply even if your experience isnâ t a 100% match with the position. Weâ re looking for someone with relevant skills and experience, not a checklist that exactly matches the job description. We want to help you grow, and in return, you will help us grow into a stronger, more inclusive organization.

To apply

Email your resume to careers@obermayer.us . In lieu of a traditional cover letter, please include in the body of your email answers to two questions 1) what about Widen the Circleâ s mission resonates with you personally and why? 2) Of the three programs spearheaded by WtC, which one resonates with you most, and why? (For more details about the program areas, go to https://widenthecircle.org/about– us.) Please also indicate where you learned about this position. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis with the goal to fill this position ASAP.
