BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. WFP is the world’s largest humanitarian organization saving lives in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters and the impact of climate change.
Around 20,000 people work for the organization, many in remote areas, directly serving the hungry poor.

ShareTheMeal is WFP’s fundraising and awareness-raising app. Free to download, the award-winning app is a pioneering way for people to join our efforts in creating a world with zero hunger. ShareTheMeal currently has more than 1.3 million supporters worldwide who have shared more than 185 million meals (US$100 million). WFP is pursuing an ambitious growth strategy for individual giving, and ShareTheMeal is a key driver for this strategy. The Berlin-based team and remote colleagues focus on increasing funds raised through developing the app with new features, increasing user engagement, and growing the user base through marketing and communication initiatives. The role heads the Software Engineering team to improve the fundraising app and support WFP and PSP goals.
ACCOUNTABILITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
The Consultant reporting to the Head of the ShareTheMeal initiative is expected to:
- Lead the Software Engineering team of ShareTheMeal and advise/consult the Individual Fundraising teams as needed.
- Lead high-performing teams to create and implement strategic initiatives, adopting Agile principles to continuously improve processes and drive business value for WFP and PSP.
- Mentor and coach direct reports and their reports to sustain and improve team performance (Android, iOS, Web, QA, Backend, Infrastructure Engineers, and Lead Engineers).
- Optimize ways of working and team processes for high-impact output while balancing agility with established external structures.
- Foster a culture of user-centricity and experimentation based on data and insights in collaboration with the BI Hub, ensuring effective delivery and ongoing maintenance of platforms and services.
- Develop tech strategy and OKRs and ensure operational excellence in strategy implementation.
- Improve internal tooling and automation; interface with WFP’s Technology Division (TEC) on tools and processes; maintain up-to-date knowledge of IT Policies and Standards at WFP.
- Plan, develop and implement an updated tech strategy and roadmap for the ShareTheMeal team, establishing OKRs to measure performance and delivery.
- Advise IF tech teams on tech strategy and implementations, assisting with relevant audits and reviews.
- Ensure IT solutions and environments are designed, developed, implemented, secured, tested, and documented to required quality standards.
- Ensure IT solutions comply with relevant technological and organizational regulatory requirements and procedures (TEC2020/001).
- Collaborate with staff at all levels to ensure digital and technology products are customer-led and scalable.
- Collaborate with tech vendors and partners to drive decisions that optimize for output for WFP.
OTHER
- Stay abreast of sector trends in major donor fundraising and bring relevant learnings to the team.
- Work with existing global systems policies and processes to deliver objectives in a compliant, collaborative, and efficient way.
- Other tasks as appropriate to support the Tech team and PSP.
DELIVERABLES AT END OF CONTRACT
- A stable and engaged ShareTheMeal Software Engineering team meeting objectives and growing with the organization.
- A tech strategy and roadmap for 2023 onwards to support the PSPF strategy.
- Stable operations of the ShareTheMeal mobile app, website, backend and infrastructure.
- Engaged, high-performing teams driven by the mission and continuing to work at ShareTheMeal.
- Robust IT solutions compliant with applicable guidelines, including WFP’s Guidelines for Software Solutions.
- Clean source code in WFP repositories.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education: Graduate Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or other related field.
Experience: At least 9 years of software engineering experience with scaling native mobile applications and web platforms to millions of users; at least 4 years of experience managing software teams.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Proficiency with mainstream software design and development technologies and methodologies; experience delivering high-quality IT solutions using Agile Scrum.
- Knowledge of CI/CD; software optimization; understanding of accessibility, security, and compliance design principles for scalable IT solutions; awareness of differences between mobile and desktop platforms and how to optimize output per platform.
- Ability to integrate multiple data sources and databases into one system and to design database schemas that support business processes.
- Experience developing native mobile applications using Kotlin and Swift.
- Experience with cloud technologies (AWS, Docker, Terraform, Redis, etc.).
- Experience in software development within an international organization or startup.
- Strong analytical abilities (quantitative and qualitative) and mature interpersonal skills.
- Collaborative spirit, ability to liaise with a wide range of people across cultures with credibility and diplomacy.
- Strong time management, planning, and ability to handle multiple priorities and tight deadlines.
- Self-motivated with a high degree of autonomy; committed to WFP’s aims.
Languages: Proficiency in written/spoken English; knowledge of a second UN language is a plus.
