Organizational Context (a) Organizational Setting
The WIPO Internship Program provides an opportunity for interns to complement their educational experience and develop their professional skills and competencies through work participation in an international context. Learning through experience and exposure together with feedback from the intern’s supervisor and colleagues, play a major role in achieving these objectives. In addition, learning opportunities in the form of structured courses and programs may be provided to the intern during the internship, if available.
This internship is located in the English Translation Section, Language Division, Patents and Technology Sector.
(b) Reporting Lines
The intern will work under the supervision of the Head of the English Translation Section of the Language Division, Patents and Technology Sector.
Objectives During the internship, the intern will:
Apply substantive knowledge in a practical setting;
Contribute to the efficiency and quality of the editing and translation process;
Develop greater knowledge and understanding of cutting-edge translation tools;
Obtain experience in working for an international organization.
Duties and Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Head of Section and the Translation assistants, the intern participates in the work of the Division relating to the preparation of meeting reports for the Program and Budget Committee (June) and WIPO Assemblies (July). In particular, their tasks will include the following:
Assisting with the light editing of statements in English for verbatim meeting reports for the WIPO Program and Budget Committee (June) and the WIPO Assemblies (July)
Translating statements from UN languages made during those meetings
Exploring AI-assisted translation/editing tools in the existing working environment
Assisting with an initial review of term entries (English) in the Language Division’s term base in MultiTerm with a view to filtering out extraneous terms (time permitting)
Performing other related tasks as required by the Language Division, including for other language sections
Requirements
University degree (first level or advanced level) in Translation or related disciplines.
Degree in Language Technologies would be an advantage.
Experience (Essential)
Work/study in Translation, English Editing, Translation Technology or a related field.
Proficiency in SDL Trados and MultiTerm,
Knowledge of/experience in terminology database management.
Basic editing skills.
Broad knowledge of CAT tools and AI in relation to translation.
Demonstrated knowledge sharing and learning.
Experience working in a multicultural setting.
Knowledge of any of the following UN languages: French, Russian, Spanish.

Category I Internship
Individuals pursuing a first-level university degree who are in their third or fourth year of study and/or need to complete an internship as part of their degree requirements; or
Individuals who have obtained their first-level university degree less than two years from the date of the internship application; or
Individuals pursuing their first advanced university degree who have neither completed the coursework nor the final thesis.
Category II Internship
Individuals pursuing their first advanced university degree who have completed their coursework, but not the final thesis; or
Individuals who have obtained their first advanced university degree and who are pursuing a subsequent university degree; or
Individuals who have obtained their most recent advanced university degree less than two years from the date of the internship application.
Stipend
Category I
interns receive a monthly stipend of 1,645 Swiss francs.
Category II
interns receive a monthly stipend of 2,170 Swiss francs.
Note: the stipend amounts above are for a fulltime internship. The Internship takes place in Geneva, Switzerland, and it cannot be carried out remotely.
