WSP GmbH in Aachen develops and builds plants for the thermal and chemical treatment of metal strip and other industrial products. Our projects range from individual machines and units to complete production lines for customers in Germany, Europe, Asia, and the USA. Process engineering, mechanical design, electrical engineering, automation, manufacturing, and assembly all happen in house.
For our design department we are looking for a development engineer or design engineer (m/f/d) in machine and plant engineering to take on the conceptual side of our mechanical design work. The CAD system is Autodesk Inventor.
One question is at the centre of the role: how do we solve a technical problem sensibly, robustly, and as simply as possible?
Your Responsibilities
- Developing and detailing machines, assemblies, and plant components
- Working out technical concepts for new requirements and customer-specific solutions
- 3D design in Autodesk Inventor
- Sizing and selecting suitable mechanical components
- Refining and improving existing designs
- Coordinating with project management, process engineering, electrical engineering, manufacturing, and assembly
- Accounting for manufacturability, ease of assembly, maintenance access, and cost while still at the design stage
- Seeing your designs through to production and assembly readiness
- Contributing to the standardisation of recurring assemblies and design solutions
Your Profile
You have vocational training or a degree in mechanical engineering, design engineering, or a comparable field - as a state-certified mechanical engineering technician, a mechanical engineer, or a design engineer with corresponding professional experience. How you approach technical problems matters more to us than the exact qualification.
- Strong skills in mechanical design
- Experience with Autodesk Inventor or a comparable 3D CAD system
- Good spatial and technical understanding
- Experience in machine, special-purpose machine, or plant engineering
- An understanding of manufacturing and assembly methods, and how to reflect them in a design
- A wish to develop solutions yourself rather than only draw them
- Pragmatic thinking - not making technical solutions more complicated than they need to be
- An independent way of working combined with close exchange across departments
- Fluent German is required for this position
What Makes This Role Different
Our plants grow out of a concrete technical requirement, and each one is tailored to that customer's process. Many of the designs simply do not exist beforehand.
So we are looking for someone who enjoys sitting in front of an empty Inventor model and asking: how would we best build this? You have considerable freedom in answering that.
Your design does not then disappear into a drawing archive either: with our own manufacturing and close cooperation with assembly, you see directly how your solutions hold up in practice.
What to Expect
- Technically varied projects in international plant engineering
- Demanding one-off and special-purpose plants rather than series design
- Considerable creative freedom and short decision paths
- Direct cooperation with project management, process engineering, manufacturing, and assembly
- In-house manufacturing, and therefore immediate feedback on your design
- CAD workstations with Autodesk Inventor
- The chance to actively shape technical standards and the future of design work at WSP
