BACKGROUND

IUCN is the world’s oldest and largest global environmental network – a democratic membership union with more than 1,400 government and NGO member organizations, and almost 15,000 volunteer scientists in more than 160 countries. The IUCN European Regional Office (EURO) enables vital linkages for IUCN Members, Commissions and Secretariat to governments, EU institutions, NGOs, scientists, practitioners, the private sector and other stakeholders to accelerate the implementation of the European Green Deal, the EU 2030 Biodiversity Strategy and related national and regional biodiversity strategies and plans. EURO provides critical knowledge and advice to decision makers on conservation policy and action, and help them connect and engage.

IUCN EURO is looking for a highly motivated Nature Restoration Officer to join our Programme and Policy team. The successful candidate will support the IUCN team and French authorities and national stakeholders on the preparation of the national Nature Restoration Plan. This is an important thematic position in the IUCN Regional Office for Europe.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Duty station: IUCN European Regional Office – Bonn / Brussels

Under the supervision of the EURO Head of Programme and Policy, and in close collaboration with the IUCN French National Committee, staff from the IUCN European Regional Office and other IUCN Offices in Europe and Headquarters, the Nature Restoration Senior Officer will ensure smooth implementation and coordination of a project to support France towards the preparation of the national Nature Restoration Plan, and contribute to the overall work of the team.

The Nature Restoration Senior Officer will have the following tasks:

  • Provide support to the implementation of the IUCN European Work Programme;
  • Oversee and manage thematically-aligned projects ensuring their timely and effective delivery, budgetary execution, monitoring and reporting;
  • Coordinate and manage a project to support the preparation of the French national Nature Restoration Plan, with a particular focus on socio-economic issues and climate change aspects;
  • Manage external consultants;
  • Contribute to technical reports on nature restoration, with a strong focus on socio-economic issues and climate change aspects in France.
  • Support donor relations and fundraising in the European Regional Office;
  • Represent IUCN in relevant fora and events, ensuring the visibility and recognition of IUCN among EU institutions, partners and stakeholders;
  • Support the development and dissemination of thematically-aligned IUCN knowledge tools and standards;
  • Identification of communications opportunities and drafting content for communication material;
  • Coordinate and contribute to the elaboration of relevant documents, reports, articles, briefings, and communication materials, as needed, based on the ongoing analysis of relevant knowledge, adapted to relevant audiences;
  • Other relevant tasks in support of related IUCN work, as needed.

The above job description contains the main duties and responsibilities for this position. However, in an organisation such as IUCN, staff members are expected to show flexibility in their approach to work and be willing to undertake other tasks that are reasonably allocated to them but which are not part of their regular job description. Where any task becomes a regular part of an employee’s responsibilities, the job description will be changed in consultation with the employee and relevant colleagues.

SALARY

The gross annual salary for this position is in the range from EUR 55’000 to EUR 70’000 (depending on skills, experiences and IUCN equity analysis) subject to deductions for social security contributions and health insurance, and before tax.
REQUIREMENTS

  • Affinity with the vision and mission of IUCN;
  • Master’s degree in a subject relevant to the tasks to be performed;
  • At least 8 years of relevant professional experience, of which 5 should include project management and people management, ideally in an international context;
  • Good understanding of the socio-economic aspects of nature conservation and ecosystem restoration; knowledge of the EU and French nature and climate policy context is an asset;
  • Proven record of accomplishments in project development and implementation;
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement processes; knowledge of French land use stakeholders is an asset.
  • Familiarity with EU funding and experience in project fundraising;
  • Complete fluency in French and in English, including excellent writing and editing skills in both languages is needed;
  • Knowledge of IUCN tools and standards is an asset;
  • Full computer literacy, with experience in applying Microsoft Office as a minimum skill set;
  • Strong research, analytical and writing skills; detail- and outcome-oriented; able to work on multiple task simultaneously; organization, multitasking, and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to work within a team and independently;
  • Highly motivated to learn and develop new skills, keen to bring in own ideas;
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines without compromising the quality of outputs;
  • Ability to travel, nationally in France and on occasions internationally.
