Senior Data Engineer - Privacy Tech (All genders)

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will contribute to the creation and delivery of software products that enable Zalando’s internal Software Engineers and Data Engineers to protect the personal data of millions of Zalando customers at rest, in use, and in transit.

As part of this critical technology team, you will play a key role in understanding the needs of our stakeholders and help shape the future of the platform. As a Software Engineer, you will be building, operating, improving, and extending the data protection platform, supporting integration with thousands of datasets within Zalando.

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

1. Refine and evolve our data platform, ensuring efficiency and scalability.
2. Identify and address performance bottlenecks, optimizing code and improving overall system efficiency.
3. Write code that is modular, readable, easily testable, and maintainable.
4. Work with senior data engineers and peers in the team to evolve the system architecture and ensure seamless integration with thousands of datasets.
5. Contribute to improving code quality and best practices, including active participation in code reviews.
6. Support and shape Zalando’s engineering community by sharing best practices, supporting junior team members and peers, and interviewing additional engineering talents.

YOU HAVE

1. Over 5 years of experience in building and operating data processing pipelines at scale.
2. Over 5 years of hands-on experience with Spark and performance tuning.
3. Over 5 years of experience in deploying big data processing pipelines in cloud environments such as AWS EMR and Databricks.
4. Experience with databases such as DynamoDB and Redis.
5. Solid programming skills in Scala or Java; Golang is a plus.
6. Strong capability to research, self-learn, and develop deep expertise in your area.
7. Good understanding of modern data engineering practices, including data modeling, data architecture, pipeline as code, and data observability.
8. Experience with GCP, AWS Lambda, Kafka, or AWS Kinesis (as a plus).
