Position Description:

CGI is a European leader in Space Ground Segment systems and services in the domains of Earth Observation, Navigation, Satellite Communications, Space Safety and Mission Operations. We provide critical services and solutions to European & national agencies and institutions, the scientific community, the commercial sector, as well as to the wider public. We are both major contributors to, and act as thought leaders in, several key European space initiatives including the Copernicus and Galileo programs, designing, and developing cutting edge solutions for our clients.

The European Space market is dynamic, evolving and rapidly growing. CGI is now looking to further expand our business in this area, building on our more than 40-year successful heritage. We are therefore seeking an experienced Senior Space Systems Engineer (m/f/d) to support this growth.

As a Senior Space Systems Engineer (m/f/d), you will contribute to the definition, design and delivery of end-to-end space systems. The role has a strong focus on ground segment engineering and mission operations, including ground infrastructure, mission control systems and operational concepts, while maintaining an end-to-end understanding of the spacecraft, payload and communication systems they support. You will maintain an end-to-end system perspective, define and analyse requirements and interfaces, develop system architectures and technical solutions, and support integration, verification, validation and operations. You will work across institutional projects, commercial ventures and defence programs, from early-phase studies through to operational systems.

Your future duties and responsibilities:

  • Lead systems engineering activities for end-to-end space systems, with focus on ground segments but also covering space segment and inter-segment interfaces.
  • Translate mission objectives, stakeholder needs and operational requirements into system requirements, architectures and technical solutions.
  • Define and assess system architectures, functional decompositions, system boundaries and interfaces across spacecraft, payloads, communications, ground stations and mission control.
  • Develop and review CONOPS covering mission scenarios, operational modes, contingencies and interactions between space and ground elements.
  • Perform requirements engineering, including decomposition, allocation, traceability and verification, and maintain system-level technical consistency.
  • Define and manage internal and external interfaces and contribute to Interface Control Documents (ICDs).
  • Conduct technical trade-offs and engineering analyses and support system design across relevant spacecraft and ground-segment disciplines.
  • Prepare and review system engineering documentation and represent system-level topics in customer, meetings, reviews and workshops.
  • Lead technical work packages, coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities, support proposals and provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers.

Required qualifications to be successful in this role:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in space systems engineering, ideally with responsibility for system-level activities in space programs.
  • Broad understanding of end-to-end space systems, including both space and ground segments and the interfaces between them.
  • Good understanding of ground-segment architectures, including ground stations, mission control, mission planning, monitoring & control, data processing, communications and operational infrastructure.
  • Good understanding of spacecraft architecture and major subsystems such as AOCS/GNC, onboard data handling, communications, power, thermal, propulsion and payloads. Deep specialist expertise in all areas is not required.
  • Experience with requirements engineering and management, system architecture, functional analysis, interface engineering and technical trade-offs.
  • Experience developing or reviewing CONOPS and operational concepts across space and ground operations.
  • Ability to understand complex technical problems across different engineering disciplines while maintaining an overall system perspective.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary engineering teams and coordinating interfaces between specialist disciplines.
  • Familiarity with ECSS systems engineering processes and standards or comparable space-industry standards.
  • Strong analytical, communication and problem-solving skills, with experience in customer-facing technical roles, reviews, workshops and/or technical leadership.
  • Excellent written and spoken English as well as German.

    Nice to Have

  • Experience with requirements/model-based engineering tools such as DOORS, Jama, SysML/UML or equivalent is desirable.
  • Experience across multiple phases of the space mission lifecycle, from early studies through development, integration, verification and operations.
  • Experience with institutional, commercial or defence space programmes.
  • Knowledge of satellite communications, Earth observation, navigation, space safety, space surveillance or satellite operations.
  • Experience with systems-of-systems, satellite constellations or distributed space architectures.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity and security engineering for space systems.
  • Experience with MBSE, SysML-based modelling, automation or AI/ML for space systems.
  • Understanding of orbital mechanics, mission analysis, autonomy or GNC; experience in customer-facing proposals and supplier coordination is a plus.
