School and Institution Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences at ETH Zurich and the PSI Center for Neutron and Muon Sciences (CNM) at the Paul Scherrer Institute invite applications for a joint professorship in Solid‑State Materials.
Position Overview The new professor will lead, in a joint appointment with ETH Zurich, the Laboratory for Multiscale Materials eXperiments (LMX) in CNM, and will thus benefit from access to PSI’s large‑scale experimental facilities and analytical infrastructure (Swiss spallation neutron source SINQ, Swiss muon source SµS, Swiss light source SLS, and Swiss free electron laser SwissFEL).
Research Focus The research programme sits at the interface of inorganic chemistry, condensed matter physics, and materials science and may include design, synthesis, characterization and applications of solid‑state inorganic materials. High‑quality, single‑crystalline materials can be produced by solid‑state, flux, chemical vapor deposition, thin‑film growth methods and may cover bulk crystals to thin films, heterostructures and 2D materials. The goal is to discover novel materials with transformative potential for quantum technologies, neuromorphic computing, energy harvesting and optoelectronics.
Materials discovery
Advanced structural characterization
Electronic materials and quantum materials
2D materials and their electronic and optoelectronic applications
Leadership & Mentorship The successful candidate should demonstrate strong and proven leadership skills, a track record for leading a large group or unit, and a commitment to support and mentor existing research groups within LMX. The professor will develop a world‑class research programme while overseeing the operation of state‑of‑the‑art material synthesis facilities to be installed in the Quantum Materials and Materials Discovery Center (QMMC).
Qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent in chemistry, material sciences, physics, or a related field.
Strong motivation and clear commitment to student education, including teaching at undergraduate (German or English) and graduate (English) levels.
Excellent international record of research accomplishments in the areas listed above.
Equal Opportunity Statement ETH Zurich is an equal opportunity and family‑friendly employer, values diversity, and is responsive to the needs of dual‑career couples.
Application Procedure Please apply online. Applications should include a covering letter; curriculum vitae; list of publications; three statements on research, teaching and leadership; descriptions of the three most important achievements; and a certificate of the highest degree. The covering letter must be formally addressed to the President of ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr. Joël Mesot. The closing date for applications is 30 September 2026.
