Senior/Principal Engineer – Energy Management System & BESS Applications

We are recruiting on behalf of a leading global technology organisation for a Senior/Principal Engineer – Energy Management System (EMS) & BESS Applications. This role will focus on developing advanced energy management algorithms that optimise Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for performance, revenue and grid stability across European markets.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement advanced EMS strategies for BESS dispatch across front-of-meter and behind-the-meter applications.




• Develop optimisation and forecasting algorithms for energy arbitrage, FCR, aFRR and other flexibility services.




• Model and integrate batteries, power conversion systems and management systems into complete ESS solutions.




• Develop multi-objective optimisation approaches, including linear, nonlinear and AI-based models.




• Validate algorithms through simulation, HIL/CHIL testing and prototype development.




• Work closely with software, hardware and BESS control teams to ensure successful system integration.




• Provide technical insight into evolving European energy markets and requirements.

Key Requirements

• Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, Control Engineering, Computer Science or a related field.




• Strong experience in energy systems modelling, optimisation, forecasting and control strategies.




• Strong Python skills for algorithm development, modelling and data analysis.




• Knowledge of C/C++.




• Experience with power system modelling and simulation tools such as DIgSILENT or Modelica.




• Proven experience with BESS architectures, components and operation, including energy management algorithms for battery systems.




• Understanding of European electricity markets, flexibility services and grid operation is desirable.




• Experience with SCADA/EMS, embedded systems, CHIL/HIL testing or EMS development is advantageous.




• Experience leading technical projects or teams is desirable.




• Strong communication skills and experience working in international, multicultural environments.




• Fluent English; additional European or Chinese languages are advantageous.




• Professional experience with Linux is beneficial.
