Senior Optical Engineer – Precision Measurement Systems

We are seeking an experienced Senior Optical Engineer to take technical ownership of advanced optical measurement subsystems from initial concept through prototype development, validation and industrialisation.

This is a hands-on senior engineering role for an optical specialist with strong experience in precision measurement, optomechanical design and system validation.

Key Responsibilities

• Take technical ownership of optical measurement subsystems throughout the complete development lifecycle.
• Define optical architectures and translate system requirements into robust optical designs.
• Design and optimise precision optical systems using tools such as Zemax.
• Perform optical modelling, simulation and tolerance analysis to ensure system performance and manufacturability.
• Develop and integrate optomechanical assemblies for high-precision measurement applications.
• Lead prototype development, optical alignment and experimental characterisation.
• Develop and implement calibration strategies and measurement procedures.
• Plan and execute system validation against technical and performance requirements.
• Investigate optical and measurement errors and drive root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
• Assess optical sensitivity, stability, repeatability and overall measurement performance.Work closely with mechanical, electrical, software and systems engineers to integrate optical subsystems into complete products.
• Support design reviews, technical decision-making and resolution of complex engineering issues.
• Manage technical interfaces with suppliers and support the selection and qualification of optical components.
• Support design transfer from prototype into industrialised, production-ready systems.
• Create and maintain optical specifications, test procedures, technical documentation and validation reports.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior optical engineers.

Requirements

• Degree or equivalent experience in Optical Engineering, Photonics, Physics or a related technical discipline.
• Significant professional experience in optical system design and precision measurement.
• Strong experience with Zemax or equivalent optical design software.
• Demonstrable expertise in optomechanics, tolerance analysis and optical system optimisation.
• Experience with calibration, experimental characterisation and system validation.
• Strong understanding of precision measurement principles and optical error sources.
• Experience taking optical systems from concept through prototype, validation and production.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and technical communication skills.
• Comfortable working across multidisciplinary engineering and industrial environments.
