Stax Talent is working with a well-funded deep tech company in the energy sector to hire a manufacturing engineer for its superconducting magnet programme.
The opportunity
Our client is developing large-scale superconducting magnet systems for a next‑generation energy application. The team is now building its in‑house coil manufacturing capability, starting with test coils and moving towards full-size builds and, in time, volume production.
This is a hands‑on ownership role. You’ll shape how the manufacturing process is developed, from the first winding trials through to scale‑up.
What you’ll be doing
- Developing winding, joining and fixation processes for superconducting coils, from small test coils to full-size magnets.
- Specifying, commissioning and operating winding equipment.
- Designing and sourcing the tooling, fixtures and process equipment around the winding line.
- Leading hands‑on coil builds and coordinating people, parts and schedules.
- Identifying, qualifying and managing external suppliers for machined parts, components and processes.
- Building quality into the process: understanding the key variables and capturing data so that finished hardware matches design intent.
- Feeding manufacturing lessons back into design, and planning the route to production with the design team.
What we’re looking for
- A degree in mechanical, mechatronics, manufacturing or materials engineering, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of hands‑on experience in an industrial or lab environment, taking a manufacturing process from early trials to full‑size builds.
- Hands‑on winding experience with strip, wire or tape, for example coils, motors, transformers, cables or composites.
- Experience writing equipment specifications and working with equipment suppliers to deliver hardware.
- Working German, for supplier conversations, and clear written and spoken English.
- Confidence making and documenting decisions with incomplete information.
Highly relevant backgrounds
- Superconducting tape or wire winding, ideally machine‑driven.
- Soldering, vacuum impregnation or epoxy potting in a production setting.
- Building, commissioning or qualifying automated winding, wire or tape placement machines.
- Machinery safety and CE conformity, for example EN ISO 12100, EN 60204-1 and EN ISO 13849.
- Regulated industries such as aerospace, medical devices or nuclear.
- Machine controls programming and equipment modification.
What’s on offer
- Ownership of a manufacturing process from the ground up.
- The chance to shape how a growing company builds its core hardware.
- A competitive package and modern office and lab facilities.
