  • You conduct research within the DFG-funded project “Increased Metastability by Highly Distorted Microstructures – Understanding Athermal Martensitic Phase Transformation in the Context of Additive Manufacturing”:
Brief project description: The project aims on understanding the influence of additively manufactured microstructures in the context of athermal martensitic phase transformation. Additively manufactured materials underwent highly non-equilibrium heating and cooling cycles during processing. Due to extreme process conditions, the microstructure of steels processed by additive manufacturing exhibits subgrain networks influencing the mechanical properties significantly. The proposed project aims to create an understanding between additively manufactured microstructures, martensitic phase transformation and transformation‑induced plasticity in a metastable austenitic steel taking advanced characterization methods and numerical simulations into considerations, separating volumetric material behaviour and the deformation of individual grains.
  • Publication of project results in international journals with peer review and presentation at conferences.

You will be given the opportunity to pursue further academic qualification as part of this role.

Your profile

  • Master degree in engineering or natural sciences, applied mathematics or related fields (e.g. civil engineering, mechanical engineering, computational mechanics, physics).
  • A background in numerical methods for solid or structural mechanics problems would be desirable.
  • Experience in the areas of the finite element method, multiscale modeling or additive manufacturing, as well as regarding microstructures may be an asset.
  • Coding skills are advantageous.
  • Good team-working and communication skills.
  • Excellent English skills, both written and spoken.

We offer you

  • job security with stable overall conditions in a research-focused environment with an international scope
