Join a leading international renewable energy company as a Lead HV Engineer and play a critical role in shaping the future of sustainable energy in Germany. With a rapidly growing portfolio of grid-scale battery storage projects, this is a rare opportunity to lead high-voltage engineering efforts from concept to commissioning. Based in Hamburg, you will be at the forefront of technical innovation, ensuring robust, compliant, and grid-ready installations while building and mentoring a high-performing engineering team.

The Company

Our client is a globally recognized investor, developer, and operator of renewable energy and battery storage projects, with over 15 years of expertise spanning the entire project lifecycle. The German division is a cornerstone of the company’s growth strategy, boasting a multi-GWh battery storage portfolio and exploring cutting-edge technologies such as PV, hybrid systems, hydrogen, and other flexible infrastructure solutions.

This is your chance to join a dynamic, international organization at an exciting stage of its expansion and make a lasting impact on the renewable energy landscape.

Responsibilities

As the Lead HV Engineer, you will:

  • Technical Leadership: Take full ownership of high-voltage engineering and commissioning for the German portfolio, ensuring compliance, safety, and grid-readiness.
  • Design & Review: Develop, review, and approve HV concepts, single-line diagrams, protection and control systems, and specifications for substations, transformers, switchgear, and cable systems.
  • Grid Compliance: Ensure adherence to grid connection requirements, permits, and standards (e.g., VDE-AR-N 4120/4130, VDE 0101, VDE 0105-100).
  • Stakeholder Coordination: Lead technical discussions with grid operators, certification bodies, EPCs, and suppliers, ensuring smooth project execution.
  • Commissioning Oversight: Own the commissioning process, including FAT, SAT, protection testing, switching programs, and energization plans, while leading on-site commissioning activities.
  • HSE Responsibility: Oversee health, safety, and environmental aspects in the HV environment, including switching authorizations and safety protocols.
  • Team Building: Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing engineering team alongside the Managing Director.
  • Standardization: Establish uniform HV standards, processes, and templates, incorporating lessons learned to improve future projects.
  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks, particularly around grid connection and energization timelines.
  • International Collaboration: Provide technical input, due diligence, and supplier assessments for international projects.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in HV engineering and commissioning, including responsibility for multiple HV/MV installations, substations, or BESS projects.
  • Expertise in VDE-AR-N 4110/4120/4130 standards and HV primary/secondary systems (e.g., transformers, switchgear, protection, earthing).
  • Proven track record of working with grid operators, certification bodies, EPCs, and suppliers.
  • Switching authorization or VEFK qualification.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead technical teams, ideally in a growth-stage or international business.
  • Strong communication skills, with fluency in both German and English.
  • Willingness to travel and spend time on-site as required.

Desirable:

  • Experience in BESS, PV, wind, or hybrid energy systems.
  • Familiarity with international engineering practices and standards.
