Senior Electrical Engineer – Large-Scale BESS Projects
Overview
Our client is a UK-headquartered investor and developer of solar and battery storage projects. Since 2008, they have successfully taken projects from development through to operation. With teams in the UK, Italy, Germany, and Australia, they are at the forefront of renewable energy innovation. Their German business is expanding rapidly, and the Hamburg team plays a pivotal role in driving this growth.
We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join their Hamburg-based team. This is a unique opportunity to take ownership of the technical aspects of large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, guiding them through their entire lifecycle.
Responsibilities
As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will:
- Own the technical design of large-scale BESS projects, from feasibility studies to ready-to-build stages.
- Lead the MV/HV grid connection process, working directly with DSOs and TSOs, ensuring compliance with VDE-AR-N 4110/4120/4130 standards.
- Review and approve technical concepts, single-line diagrams, and layout designs.
- Assess, approve, and prepare specifications for all electrical balance of plant components.
- Prepare decision papers for management on procurement and technology scouting.
- Establish and maintain technical standards to ensure projects are audit-ready for investors and authorities.
- Manage internal and external stakeholders across the project portfolio.
- Lead and mentor junior engineers, fostering their professional growth.
Qualifications
To excel in this role, you will bring:
- A degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in renewable energy projects, with hands-on expertise in BESS or utility-scale PV systems.
- In-depth knowledge of German grid codes, permitting processes, and technical standards.
- A strong analytical mindset with a solutions-focused approach to decision-making.
- Fluency in both German and English, written and spoken.
Day-to-Day
Your daily responsibilities will include:
- Collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure seamless project execution.
- Conducting feasibility studies and preparing technical designs for BESS projects.
- Managing grid connection processes and liaising with DSOs and TSOs.
- Reviewing and approving technical documentation, including single-line diagrams and layout designs.
- Preparing technical reports and decision papers for senior management.
- Mentoring junior engineers and fostering a collaborative team environment.
