My client is looking for an exceptional Chief Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical and technical development of an advanced, high-power laser system.
This is a genuinely hands-on technical leadership role with significant ownership of the mechanical architecture, system integration and engineering development strategy — taking complex technology from early-stage R&D through to robust, reliable field deployment.
You’ll lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists while remaining close to the technical detail and solving some challenging problems across mechanical, thermal, optical and systems engineering.
The role
- Lead the mechanical and technical development of a high-average-power laser system from R&D through to deployment.
- Own the mechanical architecture and system-level engineering approach across structures, mechanisms, thermal management, materials, packaging and integration.
- Lead the design and development of complex mechanical and optomechanical systems, balancing performance, reliability and manufacturability.
- Oversee integration of optics, lasers, electronics, sensors, thermal systems and supporting infrastructure.
- Drive technical decisions, design reviews, prototyping, testing and engineering development.
- Solve complex challenges around structural integrity, thermal performance, vibration, alignment, tolerances and system integration.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams across optics, electronics, controls and systems engineering.
What we’re looking for
- Significant professional experience in Mechanical Engineering and complex hardware development.
- Strong experience with optics, photonics, lasers or precision electro-mechanical systems.
- Extensive experience developing and integrating high-average-power or thermally demanding systems.Strong knowledge of structures, mechanisms, materials, thermal management, vibration and precision engineering.
- Experience developing the mechanical infrastructure and supporting systems around complex laser or optical systems.
- A strong systems-engineering mindset and the ability to work across multiple engineering disciplines.
- Experience designing hardware for harsh or demanding operating environments.
- Advanced mechanical CAD experience, ideally Siemens NX or similar.
- Zemax or other optical design experience would be advantageous.
