Overview of the role

Mott Mac Donald is expanding its energy business in Germany and is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to support the delivery of major transmission and distribution projects across Germany and Europe.

This is an excellent opportunity for an entrepreneurial professional who is looking to be challenged in playing a pivotal role to grow a team from scratch.

You will play a key role in working on high-profile grid expansion programmes, renewable energy connections and transmission infrastructure projects supporting transmission system operators and developers as Germany accelerates its energy transition.

As a Principal Electrical Engineer, you will be responsible for the development and delivery of substation designs from concept through detailed design and construction support.

This role enables you to take technical ownership of substation projects spanning 110k V, 220k V and 380k V systems while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across Europe.

Key responsibilities and duties include

• Deliver engineering solutions for HV and EHV substation projects
• Prepare and review substation designs
• Develop single-line diagrams, equipment layouts and technical specifications
• Perform engineering calculations
• Design and coordinate primary design
• Liaise with clients, transmission operators and equipment suppliers
• Participate in technical reviews and design assurance activities
• Support construction and commissioning teams with technical expertise
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical excellence within the team
• Candidate specification

Essential

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
• Experience delivering HV substation projects
• Knowledge of primary design
• Familiarity with VDE, IEC, EN and utility standards
• Experience within transmission, renewable energy infrastructure
• Excellent communication skills in German and English

Desirable

• Experience with 110k V, 220k V and 380k V substations
• Team leadership or mentorship
• Experience working with TSO or DSO clients
• Chartership or equivalent professional accreditation
• Experience supporting commissioning or energisation activities
