The Robotics & Mechatronics Teams at Agile Robots are looking for a Software Engineer (m/f/d) Industrial Robot Control, who will develop the C++ control software that drives the robot arm, from single-motor to multi-body control. Control code that works in simulation still has to survive real sensor noise and hardware wear before it runs safely on a physical arm.
Responsibilities
- Control Software: Design and develop C++ software for the robot's control stack, covering kinematics, trajectory generation, and compliance control from single-motor to full multi-body coordination.
- Hardware Tuning: Identify system parameters and tune controller gains against physical hardware, turning a controller that works in simulation into one that behaves correctly on the real arm.
- Real-Time Performance: Profile control software and guarantee its real-time compliance, keeping execution within the timing margins the arm's safety and stability depend on.
- Hardware Validation: Write automated software tests, define hardware testing procedures, and work hands-on with the robot to confirm control software behaves correctly outside simulation.
- System Architecture: Contribute to the wider robot system architecture, aligning control software decisions with mechanical and electrical constraints.
- Code Quality: Review colleagues' code and give architectural feedback that keeps the control codebase maintainable as it grows.
- Technology Evaluation: Investigate and evaluate emerging robotic control methods and algorithms, and assess where they could strengthen the existing control stack.
- Background: Degree in computer science, control engineering, mechatronics, or a related engineering field, plus five or more years of professional C++ development — or seven or more years of equivalent hands‑on experience without the degree.
- Kinematics & Dynamics: Solid understanding of robot kinematics and dynamics, sufficient to reason about forward and inverse mappings and trajectory generation for a multi-body arm.
- Control Engineering: Background in control engineering, with hands‑on experience in parameter identification and controller tuning against real hardware rather than simulation alone.
- Modern C++: Proficiency in modern C++, including thread‑safe and exception‑safe code, and comfort working across the standard build, test, and debugging toolchain on Linux.
- Hardware Troubleshooting: Good troubleshooting and debugging skills applied directly to physical robotic hardware, not only to software running in isolation.
Beneficial Skills
- Python: Working programming skills in Python or a similar scripting language, used alongside C++ for tooling and analysis.
- CI/CD Ownership: Experience maintaining or extending CI/CD pipelines for a C++ codebase.
- Research Background: Research‑level experience in robotics or controls, for example through a PhD or an equivalent independent research project.
